Meet Your Team

Jackie Griggs, CNM

Jackie is a Certified Nurse-Midwife with a Masters degree in nursing who has delivered over 1,500 babies, yet can still recall each as an “honored, unique event.” She has worked in women’s health since receiving her first nursing degree in 1979 from San Jacinto College.

Jackie’s experience includes working in several different settings: homes, birth centers, clinics, and hospital care. She attended the University of Texas in Galveston (UTMB) to receive her Masters degree as an Advanced Practice Nurse in 2001 and continued to help women at home and birth centers since that time.

She is the mother of five sons, three born at home with the assistance of midwives.

I’m the mom of five sons, all grown. Three were born at home with the assistance of midwives. I’m from Amarillo, Tx, and my husband, George and I have been married for 47 years. .We have 2 small grandchildren, who bring a lot of light to our life. Even after all these years, I still love being a midwife. My hobbies are reading- especially about history, writing, and walking.

Mary Cunningham

Office Manager

This is my 12th year working for Jackie and the birth center. Getting to know our clients throughout the process of growing a baby is one of the best parts of my job. I never get tired of hearing birth stories or sympathizing with someone who is overdue. Providing great customer service is my goal and I try my best to get referrals sent out quickly, assist clients with our payment plan, and be the friendly voice when someone calls our office.

Personally, I have been blessed with a husband of 30 + years and two great daughters. We have had the house to ourselves now for a few years. We really enjoy getting in the kitchen and cooking together, taking walks and bike riding, and gardening. We see our girls as often as we can, and those times are very dear to us!

Micaela Canales, CNM

Micaela Canales (she/her)  is a Certified Nurse-Midwife. Her philosophy is that you know your body best, and that birth is a sacred, transformative, empowering event.  Micaela’s passion for sexual and reproductive healthcare is lifelong and led her to reproductive justice organizing and work as a registered nurse in high risk obstetrics for Ben Taub Hospital. Her experience includes supporting more than 300 families in birth and more than 1000 precepted clinical hours in birth centers, homebirth, and hospitals.

She completed her undergraduate degree in Anthropology and International Policy Studies with a focus on gender and sexuality at Rice University as well as undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She is licensed as a registered nurse in Texas and certified in in-patient obstetrics nursing.

I like new experiences and am excited for continued adventures with the BCB/Midwife in the Heights team! As a native Tejana, I grew up splitting my time between the Texas Hill Country and the big city of Houston. My two pet bunnies Cleo and Clementine are my constant companions and bring me endless joy with their mischievous and stubborn personalities. I am the oldest of three children and enjoy spending time with my family and large extended family. I enjoy reading, learning new things, being outdoors, practicing my Spanish, trying new food, and attempting to cook, sew, and garden. I get especially excited about museums, libraries,  farm animals, NPR, and live music.
